III.  Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cæsar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judæa, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch, of Iturea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

2when Annas was high priest and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zachariah, in the wilderness.

3And he came into all the country about the Jordan, preaching the immersion of repentance, unto remission of sins,

4as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
The voice of one crying in the wilderness,
Prepare the way of the Lord,
Make straight his paths.

5Every valley shall be filled,
And every mountain and hill shall be brought low;
And the crooked shall be straight,
And the rough ways smooth;

6And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.

7He said therefore to the multitudes that came out to be immersed by him: Brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?

8Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance; and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say to you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.

9And now also the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore, that brings not forth good fruit, is cut down and cast into the fire.

10And the multitudes asked him, saying: What then shall we do?

11He answering says to them: He that has two coats, let him impart to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise.

12And there came also publicans to be immersed; and they said to him: Teacher, what shall we do?

13And he said to them: Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

14And soldiers also asked him, saying: What shall we also do? And he said to them: Do violence to no one, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.

15And while the people were in expectation, and all were reasoning in their hearts concerning John, whether he himself were not the Christ,

16John answered them all, saying: I indeed immerse you in water; but there comes he that is mightier than I, the latchet of whose sandals I am not worthy to loose; he will immerse you in the Holy Spirit and fire;

17whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing-floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn up with fire unquenchable.

18And with many other exhortations he published the good tidings to the people.

19But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother, and for all the evils which Herod did,

20added to all this also, that he shut up John in prison.

21Now it came to pass, when all the people had been immersed, that as Jesus, having also been immersed, was praying, the heaven was opened,

22and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily shape as a dove upon him; and there came a voice out of heaven: Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

23And Jesus himself was, when he began, about thirty years of age; being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli,
